The Record of Ragnarok is a popular anime series that revolves around a battle between humans and the gods inside a battle arena. The gods want to destroy humanity but they agree to give humans a chance to survive if they can defeat them in the arena.

So, they decide to test humanity’s determination to survive by squaring it out with them in a sequence of 13 faceoffs referred to as Ragnarok.

Humans have to choose 13 champions from different times to represent their race in the showdowns. If the champions defeat the gods, humankind will have a right to survive and thrive. But if the gods defeat them, the human race will be wiped out of the earth.

Season 1

Season 1, which was released in 2021, has 12 episodes:

  • EP 1: Ragnarok
  • EP 2: Worthy Opponent
  • EP 3: Killer Move
  • EP 4: Joy
  • EP 5: File No.00000000001
  • EP 6: Great Emulation
  • EP 7: Expelled from Paradise
  • EP 8: Grace Abounding
  • EP 9: Tyrant of the Ocean
  • EP 10: Greatest Loser
  • EP 11: The Swallow Gazes into the Abyss
  • EP 12: Ragnarok Goes On

Before destroying humanity, the gods agree to allow them to reclaim their freedom and prove their worth by defeating them. This decision was reached through a unanimous vote at the council of Valhalla.

However, Brünnhilde, the oldest of the Valkyrie sisters, protested the decision. The battle begins in episode 2 of season one where Han’s dynasty warlord, Lü Bu, faces off with the Norse god Thor and wins.

The gods witnessing the battle are shocked to see the human warrior put up such a good fight. Brünnhilde’s sister Randgriz transforms herself into a sacred weapon known as the Shield Breaker, which helps Lü Bu to defeat Thor.

Although Thor’s Hammer leaves Lü Bu’s legs destroyed, the warlord’s horse, Red Hare, comes in to rescue him. In episode 5, Adam – the father of humanity – is chosen for the next battle with Zeus. Adam teams up with Valkyrie Reginleif to develop a lethal weapon called Knuckleduster.

Adam edges closer to earning humanity the victory they desire, but Zeus transforms himself into his mightiest form. Luckily, Adam has already done enough damage to him so he doesn’t have any more fight left in him.

In the next fight, humanity faces the mightiest god called Poseidon. Kojiro Sasaki gathers all his Tsubame Gaeshi powers to decimate Poseidon, but the sea deity proves to be a hard nut to crack. Sasaki’s blade is broken.

Luckily, Valkyrie Hrist steps in and transforms the damaged blade into a dual sword, giving Sasaki another chance to destroy Poseidon. However, Poseidon continues to launch powerful attacks, leaving Kojiro Sasaki worn out, but not out. The battle continues in Season 2.

Season 2

Season 2 is longer than Season 1 with three additional episodes:

  • EP 1: Good Vs. Evil
  • EP 2: The Indomitable War God
  • EP 3: Birth of a Monster
  • EP 4: The Final Labor
  • EP 5: Requiem
  • EP 6: Conflicting Motives
  • EP 7: Hundred Seals
  • EP 8: The Pinnacle of 1116
  • EP 9: Resonance
  • EP 10: The Brink
  • EP 11: Round Six
  • EP 12: Zero
  • EP 13: The Strongest Puberty in History
  • EP 14: Legend of the Underworld
  • EP 15: The Way of Light

Although humankind is down following the grueling battle between Kojiro Sasaki and Poseidon, their struggle for survival isn’t over yet.

The next round of battle involves a very evil person who offers to destroy the subsequent mighty god. This is a battle between the mighty Hercules and Jack the Ripper.

The fight ends in the ruthless fourth round where both fighters are pushed beyond their limits. Although Jack the Ripper is eventually declared the winner, he has sustained serious injuries.

To ensure that humanity doesn’t lose its momentum, Brünnhilde goes for Tameemon Raiden, a powerful wrestler, and asks him to take on the God of Destruction – Supreme Lord Shiva. Although Raiden has always suppressed his inner powers to avoid hurting people, he has to unleash it all in this faceoff.

He defeats the Destroyer in a heart-rending finish, leaving the gods, including Zeus impressed by humankind’s undying spirit. However, the deities are determined to have a decisive victory.

Buddha declares his intention to partake in the next round of battle for survival, insisting that he will be fighting on the side of humanity. Buddha doesn’t take orders from anyone. He faces a new creature from hell called Zero, who fights for the gods.

Zero gives Buddha a hard time in the arena, especially because he’s new on the battlefield and nobody can predict his next moves. But Buddha refuses to go down without a fight, scoring a final point for humanity. The battle ends with both humans and gods having three wins a piece.
